INDIAN BOARD OF FORENSIC ODONTOLOGY

Fellowship Course in Forensic Odontology

Forensic Odontology is a science for societal cause. It has been one of the objectives of the IAFO to impart knowledge and skill of forensic dentistry to dental surgeons who are interested in this art and science and have the desire to serve the community in times of calamities and help the judiciary in the deliverance of justice. With this view, the Indian Board of Forensic Odontology (IBFO) was constituted by the IAFO in 2014 to impart quality training in forensic odontology to members. Currently, its offering is the one-year Fellowship – a module-based distance education programme.

The Fellowship follows a detailed curriculum and provides extensive theoretical knowledge (mostly distance education) and specific practical skills (Laboratory hands-on and Mortuary observation) in forensic odontology, and basic knowledge required in associated subjects. The educational experience thus gained facilitates the dentist to investigate and deliver the duties in forensic dental cases with more confidence.

IBFO Fellowship Certification requires assessment of theoretical knowledge through conduct of written and/or practical examinations as required or on completion of the training and, if found proficient, shall award enrolled candidates with the “Fellowship of the Indian Board of Forensic Odontology” (issued by the IBFO and IAFO).

The Fellowship Certificate issued by the IBFO is not an academic degree and is not recognised by the Dental Council of India. It is a Certificate of professional training in forensic odontology. The certified professionals should abide by the Code of Ethics of the Dental Council of India, published in the Extraordinary Gazette of India dated 27 June, 2014 in pages 17-28.
